Photo taken in Philadelphia in spring of 2021.
This goofy little picture comes from outside our apartment building in Philly. I’m not sure who decorated the tree this way, but it’s been there since we moved here. I love it! It reminds me of something from a children’s book. I especially like Mr. Tree’s bushy moustache!
The trees whisper in the wind.
Under the bodhi tree, there’s peace.
Tree branches gather ‘round my neck.
There are ghosts in my family –
I realize this as my mother tells tales
of a biological grandfather I never knew
who blew smoke in my face
when I was two
of years my father spent in jail
of anxiety that permeates
the family tree, which is
diseased & hollowed
crumple & topple
into grayish dirt
