The planet is getting hotter
It’s a fact we can no longer deny
Global warming is media fodder
But I believe what they imply
This summer has been a scorcher
Temps in the 90s near every day
The unbearable heat is torture
I look at weather reports with dismay
Haze of summertime
Orange and yellow and mean
The world is baking
Orange sky, red ground
Climate is getting warmer
This is not a dream
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
so why do we insist on depleting it?
treating it, beating it like a dirty dog –
Adam named everything he saw,
the beasts & critters that crawl,
the plants & trees so tall,
and since those days in Eden,
we’ve furiously assaulted the planet –
Flash fiction may be the hardest type of story to write. It can also be incredibly fun. I’ve shared a few here on my site – some are good, others just okay, and some probably suck to be honest! Often, I search the internet for prompts to get me going. So, I decided to devise a list of my own flash fiction prompts for myself and to share with others.
Flowers bloom, confused by unseasonal weather.
The old man cried as the yellow half-moon murmured to the birds. The birds squeaked and squawked a beautiful song, but it didn’t stop the wise man from weeping.
“Why do you cry?” I asked him.
When humans leave, the earth regenerates.
Earth is not obedient to us.
Desert sands of deception
flames of futility
growing in the wilderness
under an orange sky
baking us at record temps –
Our Planet is dying
and she’s angry.

Note: This poem was a meditation on the wildfires happening in California right now. I haven’t read much about them, but I do know that much of it is being caused by the increasing damage of man-made climate change.
