I Hate Summer (a tanka)

Man, I hate summer
And days of oppressive heat
Give me winter cold
I’ll grab a blanket, warm drink
And hibernate for dark months

Author’s Note: Okay, so maybe “hate” is a strong word. There are many things I like about summer, especially the baseball season and the beach. But summer is definitely the least favorite of the seasons for me. I’m one of those contrarians that actually enjoys the cold seasons of autumn and winter. I can think of nothing worse than the intense heat of a summer afternoon and a heat wave. It’s this time of year I especially feel bad for people who work outside, like landscapers and roofers. Thank God for air conditioning.

  1. Yeah, the middle of summer is rough — with the heat and humidity bearing down on you. I always appreciate the loosening of summer as it fades and autumn approaches.
