Indifferent Universe (a poem)

The universe is indifferent
Candles burn to completion
The sun and stars die

Riots in the cities – the first thing to burn
Is the gothic cathedral downtown,
Smoldering, scorched to the ground

Among the rubble, an elderly priest rummages for his rosary –
He is naked, flabby, his skin is badly burned.
Onlookers laugh manically –
The Devil rules the earth.
