Groans of Thunder (a poem)

Dark clouds gather + block a stifling sun, breaking the heat

of oppressive summer days – we’re in a daze, at a standstill,

shops closed + mask-wearing maniacs stashing cash

under dirty mattresses in case of economic collapse –

Look! A lightning strike – a bolt breaks through gray sky +

groans of thunder shake, break windows of rusted-out homes.

Torrents of rain soak a leaky roof, water drips into a barren bedroom,

you light a candle, listen to the storm in the dark +

know that nature is fighting back.
