Demon in the Garden (a photo)

If you’ve visited my blog before, you may recognize this picture. I took it in late 2018 during a little adventure Rachel and I took in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia. It’s one of my favorite photos that I’ve taken from the past few years.

We walked around Old City snapping pictures that afternoon, starting at a great used bookstore I love called The Book Trader. There are quite a few parks in the area, and we stumbled upon this bizarre sculpture.

The fish-head on the sculpture reminded me of some ancient pagan god from one of Lovecraft’s tales – some sort of Fish God or relative of Cthulhu. I’ve made it the featured picture on the top of my blog.

I like to think of the sculpture as the “Demon in The Garden.” The garden was beautiful, especially on that crisp, autumn day, but the fish-head had such a menacing presence. All hail the Fish God!
